WHO calls for caution: Over 200,000 deaths in Europe from extreme heat in the

The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that European countries must strengthen protective measures against heatwaves, after more than 200,000 people have lost their lives from causes related to extreme temperatures over the past four years.

According to the WHO, most of these deaths could have been prevented through effective policies and well-coordinated plans to protect public health.

WHO Regional Director for Europe, Hans Henri P. Kluge, described extreme heat as the most immediate and deadly consequence of climate change. He stressed that heat waves are no longer rare events, but a recurring crisis that is putting increasing pressure on health systems and public infrastructure.

The WHO called on European governments to develop and implement concrete action plans against heat. Recommended measures include creating cooling centers, increasing green spaces in urban areas, protecting the elderly and other vulnerable groups, and adjusting working hours during periods of high temperatures.

According to the organization, Europe is experiencing faster rates of warming than many other regions of the world. Combined with an aging population and increasing urbanization, this situation is increasing the risk of illness and death related to extreme temperatures.

WHO has set as a long-term goal the elimination of extreme heat-related deaths through preventive measures and the cooperation of institutions at the local, national and international levels.
