US President Donald Trump has sent Iran a new and stricter ceasefire proposal, while in recent days an agreement between Washington and Tehran to end the war appeared to be nearing completion, US media reported yesterday.

According to the New York Times, citing officials with knowledge of the talks, the US president tightened some of the terms of the previous proposal and sent this new plan to Tehran.

The NYT was unable to specify the changes the Republican president made to the terms of the deal. However, according to Axios, he wants to strengthen Washington's position on several issues he considers important, such as the fate of the Islamic Republic's nuclear materials.

Trump has repeatedly stated that Tehran cannot obtain nuclear weapons and has demanded the destruction of Iran's highly enriched uranium stockpile. The nuclear issue is one of the main sticking points in negotiations to end the war that began on February 28 with the Israeli-American attack on the Islamic Republic. Among the president's other priorities is the opening and demining of the Strait of Hormuz by Iran, which the latter has effectively closed since the beginning of the war.

Trump's new terms in this new proposal are likely to further prolong the negotiations. US sources told AFP that the head of the White House had not made a decision to sign a proposal that was in his office on Friday after a meeting in the Situation Room.

Later that evening, a White House official said Trump would sign a deal with Iran only if the "red lines" he has set are respected.

On the other hand, the US is ready to resume attacks on Iran if an agreement cannot be reached.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Saturday as negotiators from Washington and Tehran worked to overcome major differences blocking a deal.

"Our ability to restart if necessary... we are more than capable. Our reserves are more than adequate for that, both there and around the globe, so we are in a very good position ," Hegseth said in Singapore.

Speaking at the Shangri-La Dialogue, Asia's premier forum for defense leaders, military and diplomats, Hegseth said the US has not turned its back on the Asia-Pacific region despite being engaged in conflict with Iran.

"We can do two things at the same time. We are strengthening our defense industrial base so that very quickly we can build 2 times, 3 times, 4 times more ammunition to ensure that all our (operations) plans are properly funded around the world," he said.
