British ambassador tries to maintain ties with US amid Starmer crisis

As the political crisis in the United Kingdom deepens and Prime Minister Keir Starmer's position increasingly shakes, the British ambassador to the United States, Christian Turner, is trying to maintain London's influence in Washington and keep strategic relations with Donald Trump's administration alive.

In public, Turner has become a prominent figure in diplomatic life in the US capital. Since his arrival at the beginning of the year, he has hosted high-profile receptions, events before the traditional White House Correspondents' Dinner and numerous meetings with figures from American politics and business.

But behind the facade of diplomatic activity, the ambassador faces a much more complex challenge: protecting British interests at a time when the government he represents is experiencing a period of deep political uncertainty.

Starmer is facing a growing rebellion within the Labour Party after poor results in local elections, while speculation is growing in London about his political future. This situation is making the job of British diplomats in the international arena more difficult.

Moreover, the British embassy in Washington continues to grapple with the fallout from scandals surrounding former ambassador Peter Mandelson and his contacts with Jeffrey Epstein. The situation was further complicated last week when deputy ambassador James Roscoe abruptly left his post amid reports of an investigation into the leak of classified information.

Despite the turbulence, Turner has chosen to adapt to the new American political reality. He has made visits to Florida, met with figures close to the MAGA movement, and built direct contacts with Trump's circle.

During a reception at the ambassador's residence in February, Turner even displayed a red hat with the slogan "America is Back," which, he said, had been given to him by the American president himself.

The British diplomat is also trying to avoid the traditional idea of a “special relationship” between the US and Britain. According to diplomatic sources, he has asked aides not to use the phrase, arguing that the ties between the two countries cannot be taken for granted and require ongoing engagement.

Turner, who previously served in Washington in the early 2000s, is operating in a very different American capital. Political polarization is deeper, traditional diplomatic channels have lost influence, and knowing people close to Trump has become as important as institutional relationships.

However, he has achieved some concrete results. According to sources familiar with the matter, Turner played a role in the negotiations that led to the removal of US tariffs on Scotch whisky ahead of King Charles' visit to the US.

He has also contributed to reducing tensions between London and Washington over the conflict with Iran, after Trump expressed dissatisfaction with the British government's initial stance on the use of British military bases.

In Washington, Turner enjoys a positive reputation among both Republican and Democratic ranks. Republican Senator Lindsey Graham has described him as a respected and skilled diplomat, while figures close to the Biden administration praise his ability to build relationships and make his mark in the US capital.

One of the most important moments of his term was organizing the visit of King Charles and Queen Camilla for the 250th anniversary of US independence, an event that gave him the opportunity to build new connections with the Trump administration and the American political elite.

However, the main challenge remains the same: keeping transatlantic relations strong as London faces political uncertainty and as the very future of the Starmer government remains in question. / Adapted from “Politico”
