Scandals surround Sánchez, Spanish prime minister faces biggest political crisis
Eight years after taking power, Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez is facing the greatest pressure of his political career, as investigations into corruption and influence peddling draw ever closer to his family circle, allies and key figures in the Socialist Party.
Although Sánchez himself is not under investigation, a series of cases involving his wife, brother and former close associates have intensified calls for his resignation and raised questions about the survival of his minority government.
The prime minister's brother, David Sánchez, is facing trial on charges of influence peddling related to a public post in the cultural sector in Badajoz. Meanwhile, his wife, Begoña Gómez, is under investigation for alleged misuse of funds and influence peddling, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for June 9.
The Socialist Party is also under pressure. Former Transport Minister José Luis Ábalos, once one of Sánchez's closest allies, was expelled from the party after being implicated in an investigation into questionable mask contracts during the pandemic. He denies any wrongdoing.
The crisis deepened further after the investigation into former Socialist Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, who is accused of using his influence to help airline Plus Ultra secure a 53 million euro bailout from the state. Zapatero also denies any wrongdoing.
Recently, police conducted searches at the Socialist Party headquarters in Madrid as part of an investigation into allegations that people affiliated with the party attempted to discredit police officers, judges, and prosecutors investigating corruption cases.
The leader of the conservative opposition, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, has described the scandals as a "criminal carousel" and has called for Sánchez's resignation and the announcement of early elections.
However, the Spanish prime minister insists he will finish his term, relying on fragile parliamentary allies who are unwilling to pave the way for a right-wing government supported by the Vox party.
Analysts estimate that Sánchez still has room to survive politically, but warn that new revelations, especially if related to illegal party financing, could make the pressure unbearable. / The Leader
