The US Central Command (CENTCOM) released footage of the military operation against two Iranian-flagged tankers in the Gulf of Oman, in another episode of escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.
According to the official statement of CENTCOM, US forces intervened on Friday against the tankers M/T Sea Star III and M/T Sevda, which, according to Washington, were attempting to enter Iranian ports in violation of the naval blockade imposed on Iran since April 13.
US authorities stated that US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets, launched from the aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush, struck the funnels of the two ships with precision munitions, disabling them without sinking them.

Footage released by the US military shows fighter jets performing maneuvers over tankers, while the impacts causing damage to the ships' upper structures are then recorded.
"CENTCOM took blocking measures against two Iranian-flagged empty tankers attempting to enter an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. An F/A-18 Super Hornet from the USS George HW Bush neutralized both vessels by striking their smokestacks with precision munitions," the US command said in a statement.
According to the US military, the goal was to prevent ships from entering Iran, not to sink them.
CENTCOM also announced that on May 6, US forces had also neutralized the Iranian tanker M/T Hasna, which was heading towards an Iranian port in the Gulf of Oman. The operation was carried out by another F/A-18 Super Hornet aircraft launched from the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln.
According to the statement, none of the three ships are now moving towards Iran.
CENTCOM commander Admiral Brad Cooper said US forces in the Middle East will continue to fully enforce the naval blockade on ships entering or leaving Iran.
"Our forces remain committed to full enforcement of the blockade. Our men and women in uniform are doing an extraordinary job," he said.
According to the US military, since the blockade was imposed, several Iranian ships have been neutralized, while more than 50 naval vessels have been diverted by CENTCOM forces.
Meanwhile, Iranian media reported "sporadic clashes" between US forces and Iranian units in the strategic Strait of Hormuz area, one of the most important energy corridors in the world.
The escalation of tensions in the region comes at a sensitive moment for security in the Middle East, as the US and Iran continue to clash over control of maritime movement and strategic influence in the Persian Gulf.
