As he awaits a message from Iran about a peace agreement in the Middle East, US President Donald Trump has announced that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a three-day ceasefire.
The ceasefire will begin on May 9 and last until May 11, in conjunction with the Victory Day commemorations in Russia.
In a post on the "Social Truth" platform, Trump stated that the ceasefire would include the suspension of all military operations and a major prisoner exchange, with 1,000 prisoners released by each side.
He described the current conflict as the biggest war since World War II and said that negotiations to end it are continuing.
“I am pleased to announce that there will be a THREE-DAY CRUISE (May 9, 10, and 11) in the War between Russia and Ukraine. The celebration in Russia is for Victory Day, but so is the Ukraine, because they were also a major part and factor in World War II. This ceasefire will include a suspension of all kinetic activities, as well as a prisoner exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each country. This request was made directly by me, and I greatly appreciate its approval by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. We hope this is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought war. Talks are ongoing to end this Great Conflict, the largest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day. Thank you for your attention to this matter ,” Trump wrote.
