Arrested along with Mogherini, Stefano Sannino announces retirement from

Stefano Sannino has announced that he will take early retirement from his current position as Director-General for the Middle East, North Africa and the Gulf, following his involvement in the ongoing investigation into suspected misuse of EU funds.

In an internal message to staff on Wednesday, and seen by Euractiv, Sannino confirmed that he had been questioned about a project carried out during his tenure as Secretary-General of the EU's diplomatic service, the EEAS.

However, he said he was “confident in the work of the magistrates and convinced that everything will be clarified.” Sannino was taken into custody and then released late Tuesday after being notified as a suspect in the fraud investigation that has rocked Brussels.

Citing the need to protect the work of the Directorate General, Sannino said he no longer considered it "appropriate to continue" in his role and would retire at the end of December.

“The Directorate General must remain focused on its activity and implement the ambitious agenda we have developed,” he wrote.

Deputy CEO Michael Karnitschnig will immediately assume the role of acting CEO, the email said.

This is the first high-level departure linked to the widening investigation that includes raids at the EEAS and the College of Europe, first reported by Euractiv.
