US President Donald Trump hosted his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, at the White House today, in a meeting that was held in an atmosphere mixed between diplomatic protocol and personal tones.
The meeting came at a crucial time for developments in Ukraine and renewed diplomatic efforts between the U.S. and Russia. Trump said it was an "honor" to welcome Zelenskyy, whom he described as "a strong leader" and "a man I've known very well."
But what caught the eye was an unexpected comment by Trump, which momentarily overshadowed the larger geopolitical issues.
“ I think he looks really nice in that jacket ,” Trump said, publicly complimenting Zelenskyy on his choice of attire. The statement came months after Zelenskyy was criticized by an American journalist for his informal attire during his first visit to the White House in February.
Apparently, the Ukrainian president has chosen a more classic appearance this time, following the expectations of American protocol.
Meanwhile, Trump confirmed that one of the main topics of today's conversation will be his recent phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
" We're making great progress ," Trump declared. "Things are going well. It started in Alaska, where some guidelines were discussed, and now we want to see if we can take this process to the end," he added, without giving many details about the content of the talks with the Kremlin.
Zelenskyy's visit comes at a sensitive moment for Ukraine, which faces major security challenges and the need for international support in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
