Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has said that any possibility of a meeting, proposed by Donald Trump, between the US president and Iran's Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, is unrealistic.
Trump said on Wednesday that he "would like to meet" with Mojtaba Khamenei, in an interview for a podcast by the New York Post newspaper, at a time when talks between Tehran and Washington to end the war in the Middle East have stalled.
"I saw an article suggesting that Donald Trump is ready for a meeting or wants a meeting to be organized. But I think we have to be realistic ," Abbas Araghchi said in an interview with the Lebanese network Al-Mayadeen, which aired yesterday.
Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded his father, Ali, who was assassinated on February 28, the first day of the war, which was sparked by Israeli-American attacks on his Tehran residence after more than 36 years in power.
But since his appointment in early March as the Islamic Republic's third supreme leader, he has not appeared publicly, apart from written statements attributed to him.
" For security reasons, security services advise him not to have a greater public presence than he currently has ," Abbas Araghchi stressed.
Donald Trump has reiterated in recent days that he would like a meeting with Mojtaba Khamenei.
"I would like to meet him. I would like to meet everyone and maybe we will meet at some point, depending on how everything goes," Trump said on the New York Post podcast.
After 40 days of bombing, a fragile ceasefire between Iran and the US came into effect on April 8. But the two warring sides frequently accuse each other of violating the ceasefire, following fresh attacks this week in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.
Abbas Araghchi called on the US to "understand the realities in Iran", to "change the way they see things" and to "adjust their relations with the Islamic Republic of Iran as a regional power and beyond".
