US President Donald Trump's threats to invade Greenland earlier this year were misconstrued, the US ambassador to the European Union, Andrew Puzder, said on Friday. A narrative that is a 180-degree turn from that of just a few months ago.

"It was interpreted as if we were somehow threatening the territorial integrity of Greenland, but the president never said we were going to invade ," Andrew Puzder told participants at the Brussels Economic Security Forum.

During his second term in office, Trump has repeatedly raised the idea of annexing Greenland, without ruling out the use of military force, which has caused concern in Europe. Puzder said the president's statements were useful in drawing attention to Greenland's strategic importance, but should not have been taken seriously.

The ambassador's comments came just a day after US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told the US House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee that the Arctic island is part of Denmark, "for now."

Trump ultimately ruled out a military invasion of Greenland in January, triggering talks between the US and Denmark about increasing the US military presence on the Arctic island.

Puzder, a former restaurant owner, compared Europe's reactions to Trump's threats to the foam and coffee of a cappuccino.

" You get a cappuccino, you get it for the coffee, you don't get it for the foam. So let's focus on the coffee and not the foam. And most of this is foam ," he explained.
