Meeting without cameras at the Presidential Palace, Sarkozy was received by

Emmanuel Macron has invited his predecessor, Nicolas Sarkozy, to the presidential palace days before Sarkozy becomes the first former head of state in modern French history to go to prison.

The media outlet "Le Figaro" writes that the meeting took place last Friday.

" It was normal, on a personal level, to expect one of my predecessors in this context," Macron told reporters during a trip to Slovenia.

He stressed that the visit was not intended to undermine the independence of the French judiciary.

Sarkozy said over the weekend that he would begin serving his sentence on Tuesday at Santé prison, but it is not yet known how long he will remain behind bars.

With him, he said, he will take "The Count of Monte Cristo" by Alexandre Dumas, the novel whose protagonist is the hero, who manages to escape from prison after being unjustly imprisoned.

Sarkozy was sentenced in September to five years in prison after being accused of allowing associates to try to secure financial support from Muammar Gaddafi's regime in Libya in exchange for economic and diplomatic favors.

This happened shortly before the 2007 presidential elections, which he won.

He is the first French head of state to be imprisoned since Philippe Petain, a notorious collaborator with the Nazis during the occupation of the country in World War II.
