Diplomatic tensions between Iran and Lebanon have increased following statements by Lebanese President Joseph Aoun, who accused Tehran of using his country as a bargaining chip in its confrontation with the United States and Israel.
In an interview with CNN, Joseph Aoun sharply criticized Iranian policy, stating that Tehran's actions do not align with the interests and desires of the Lebanese people.
The Lebanese president's statements received an immediate reaction from Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi. Commenting on the interview, he rejected claims that Lebanon is being used as a negotiating tool by Tehran.
"If Lebanon had been a negotiating tool for Iran, we would have reached an agreement a long time ago," Araghchi said.
The Iranian diplomat also called on the Lebanese president to focus on what he called the “real enemy,” referring to Israel. The comments come at a time when Israel has intensified military operations against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.
On the other hand, Aoun stressed that he is determined to take any necessary steps to protect Lebanon from escalating the conflict. He stated that Lebanese citizens are tired of the constant clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, the Iranian-backed group that has played an important role in the country's political and military scene for years.
