Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky declared that Russia has once again chosen the path of war, after Russian President Vladimir Putin rejected the proposal for a direct meeting between them.
"Unfortunately, the Russian side once again chose war. It simply does not want to end the war," Zelensky said during his video message overnight.
The Ukrainian president added that the Kremlin's response is expected to disappoint many people around the world.
Earlier, Vladimir Putin commented on Zelensky's open letter, stating that he "sees no reason" for a meeting at this stage and that a lasting peace agreement is needed.
During his speech at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin also accused Western countries of damaging the global economy through unilateral sanctions.
According to the Russian president, Zelensky's letter contained inappropriate wording in some parts and did not create the impression of a sincere proposal for the development of talks.
Zelensky's proposal
In his open letter, Volodymyr Zelensky proposed a face-to-face meeting with Vladimir Putin and stated that Ukraine is ready to accept a complete ceasefire while negotiations are underway.
For the meeting venue, the Ukrainian president ruled out Moscow and suggested a state that traditionally hosts leaders to resolve issues of war and peace, mentioning Switzerland, Turkey, and countries in the Arab world.
Zelensky stressed that it is political leaders who make decisions on the most important issues and also proposed setting a concrete date for the meeting.
"We must first find direct answers among ourselves to the issues that remain open and not hide behind formulas, technical working groups, or endless time wasted in diplomatic ping-pong," the Ukrainian president wrote in his letter.
