Europe restores contacts with Russia? Former German Chancellor meets with Putin

Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schröder met with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday, Russian state media Interfax reported. The one-on-one meeting took place in Moscow and was described by Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov as “good and friendly.”

According to sources, Putin has repeatedly proposed Schröder as a possible mediator for talks with Europe, with the aim of finding a solution to end the war in Ukraine. The proposal has been strongly opposed by the European Union.

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas rejected the idea, saying Schröder would "sit on both sides of the table".

Who is Gerhard Schröder?

Gerhard Schröder, 82, was Chancellor of Germany from 1998 to 2005 and leader of the Social Democratic Party (SPD). During his term, he caused a deep rift with the United States over his opposition to the Iraq War, siding with France and Russia.

After leaving the chancellorship in 2005, Schröder immediately entered the world of Russian-German energy business. He became chairman of the consortium building the controversial Nord Stream gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea. He has also held important positions in other Russian energy projects, including a seat on the board of Russian state oil company Rosneft, from which he resigned in 2022 after the war in Ukraine began.

Today's meeting comes at a time when Russia is seeking channels of communication with the West, while Schröder remains a controversial figure in Germany and Europe for his close ties to the Kremlin.
