Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah have reached a ceasefire agreement, a US official said. The ceasefire took effect at 4:00 p.m. local time.
However, it remains unclear whether the agreement will hold, as previous ceasefires reached during the conflict between Israel and Lebanon have been violated several times and have not lasted.
The agreement provided for a cessation of hostilities on all fronts involved in the regional conflict, including Lebanon, as part of a framework brokered by the United States and Iran.
Despite this, the Israeli army carried out attacks in southern Lebanon overnight, claiming to have eliminated “dozens of Hezbollah terrorists.” On the other hand, Lebanese authorities reported that women and children were among the victims.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the military operations were a response to Hezbollah attacks, which he said had killed four Israeli soldiers.
Iran has stressed that a ceasefire in Lebanon is an essential condition for the continuation of diplomatic talks. This position was also confirmed by a Hezbollah MP, while Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei condemned the attacks on Lebanon and warned of the consequences they could have for peace and security in the region.
Baghaei also accused the United States of bearing direct responsibility for the situation, stressing that the cessation of fighting in Lebanon is an integral part of the agreement reached.
Two Hezbollah sources told Reuters that the Iran-backed group immediately implemented the ceasefire as soon as it was announced it would come into effect.
Meanwhile, an Israeli military spokesman said that forces on the ground in Lebanon would continue to have the freedom to act against any threat that may arise. Asked whether Israel would launch attacks on Beirut, he said the country would abide by agreements and act in accordance with the instructions of the political leadership.
