Obama offers to Mamdam for the battle of New York

Former President Barack Obama and mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani reportedly spoke on the phone for about 30 minutes.

Former President Barack Obama told New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani that he could serve as a “training partner” for the politician in the future. He also praised Mamdani’s campaign during a phone call on Saturday (November 1), according to a report in The New York Times.

Mamdani has significantly shaken up the political landscape in New York City by winning the Democratic nomination in the mayoral election against former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who is now running as an independent.

Mamdani is leading in the New York mayoral race, ahead of both Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa.

The state legislator is respected by many young progressives and has received support from prominent Democrats, while conservatives and some moderate voters are concerned about what the city might look like under his leadership.

Democratic politicians at the local, state and national levels have backed Mamdani's campaign, but support among older, more established members has so far been lukewarm and hesitant; some party leaders have not even officially endorsed him.

Obama has not yet publicly endorsed any candidate in this race, but he has commented on certain measures in the upcoming election. For example, he publicly supports California Democrats' Proposition 50, which would implement new boundaries for their electoral districts. The former president is currently campaigning in Virginia and New Jersey, where he is speaking at events for Democratic candidates for governor — former Rep. Abigail Spanberger and Rep. Mikie Sherrill.

According to two insiders, Obama called Mamdani on Saturday and the two spoke for about 30 minutes, as reported by Times sources.

It was reportedly the second time they had spoken on the phone; Obama had previously called Mamdani in June after the Democratic primary.
