Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is expected to travel to Washington soon for a meeting with US President Donald Trump, in an attempt to improve relations that have been strained in recent months. According to reports by CNN, Axios and other international media, the meeting could take place next week, after the conclusion of the NATO Summit in Ankara on July 7-8.
If it happens, this will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders since before the war with Iran.
Relations between Trump and Netanyahu have deteriorated over disagreements over Israeli military operations in Lebanon and the approach to Iran. Trump has reportedly been openly critical of the Israeli government's actions and, in private conversations published in the media, has expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu's handling of the crisis.
However, the US president has recently stated that their relationship remains good and that Netanyahu "knows who's boss."
For his part, Netanyahu aims to strengthen the strategic alliance with the United States, at a period of political importance for Israel.
The two leaders held a phone conversation on Friday to mark the 250th anniversary of US independence. The Israeli prime minister's office said Netanyahu described the US as a "guarantor of global freedom" and the two agreed to meet soon in Washington.
