NATO has called an emergency meeting after a drone hit a residential building in Romania.
The news was announced by Finnish President Alexander Stubb, while NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that "Russia's reckless behavior poses a risk to the entire" alliance.
In a post on the X platform, Rutte said he spoke with Romanian President Nicușor Dan and expressed to him NATO's "full solidarity" after the incident, which left two civilians injured.
How did the attack happen?
A Russian drone hit a residential building in the Romanian city of Galați, causing a fire and injuring two people, Romanian authorities announced in the early hours of Friday, May 29.
According to the Romanian Defense Ministry, the drone crashed near the border with Ukraine, while Russia was carrying out airstrikes on Ukrainian territory. The explosion caused a fire on the 10th floor of the building, and about 70 residents were evacuated from the area.
Emergency services confirmed that two people received medical treatment for minor injuries. This is the first time Romanian citizens have been injured in incidents involving Russian drones since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Romania's Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, calling it "a serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation."
Bucharest also notified NATO of the incident and requested the acceleration of the supply of anti-drone systems.
NATO also reacted to the event, condemning "Russia's irresponsibility" and stressing that the alliance will continue to strengthen air defenses against drone threats.
Romanian authorities announced that two F-16 fighter jets were scrambled immediately after the drones were identified in the country's airspace.
According to the Romanian Ministry of Defense, since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, 47 cases of Russian drone fragments have been recorded on Romanian territory, 12 of them this year alone.
