German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also joined the criticism of Russia for the drone attack on an apartment building in Romania.

In a reaction, he says that Russia's incursion shows its willingness to escalate the war against Russia in other countries as well.

According to him, NATO should maintain a stronger stance on the eastern flank, adding that they are ready to defend every inch.

"Russia's reckless drone incursion into Romania once again demonstrates Russia's willingness to escalate the situation.

"Germany stands with our NATO allies. The incident once again underlines the need for a strong NATO stance on the eastern flank. We are ready to defend every inch of Allied territory,"  Merz said.

A Russian drone hit a residential building in Romania in the early hours of Friday morning, causing a fire and injuring two people, the Romanian Defense Ministry confirmed.

According to authorities, the drone crashed in the eastern city of Galați, near the border with Ukraine, while Russian forces were carrying out airstrikes on Ukrainian territory.

The General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations announced that the drone's explosive charge detonated completely upon impact, causing a fire on the tenth floor of the building.

This is the first time Romanian citizens have been injured as a direct result of a Russian drone entering Romanian territory during the war in Ukraine. So far, Moscow has not officially reacted to the incident.

Romania's Foreign Ministry described the event as a "serious and irresponsible escalation by the Russian Federation."

NATO chief Mark Rutte described the attack on Romania as reckless behavior by Russia.

"Russia's reckless behavior is a danger to us all. Last night it was seen again that the consequences of their aggressive and illegal war do not stop at their borders,"  Rutte wrote on the X platform.

He added that NATO will continue to strengthen its defense capabilities within its territory and will continue to support Ukraine in its efforts to defend itself from Russian aggression.

"I just spoke with the President of Romania regarding the Russian drone that hit a residential building in Galati. I assured him of NATO's absolute solidarity with Romania and expressed my condolences for those injured in the incident. I affirmed that NATO is ready to defend every inch of Allied territory. We will continue to increase our readiness to deter and defend against any threat, including from drones.

"Russia's reckless behavior is a danger to us all. They continue to target civilians and civilian infrastructure throughout Ukraine. And last night they showed once again that the implications of their illegal war of aggression do not stop at the border," Rutte said.
