Hormuz at the center of global trade? Oman proposes plan that could change world

Oman has presented the United States and its allies with a preliminary proposal for the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important maritime corridors for the transport of oil and gas.

According to a regional diplomat and a US source familiar with the negotiations, the proposal envisages shipping companies paying service fees for using the strait, although Omani authorities stress that these would not be considered taxes.

The document is said to be incomplete and there are still significant disagreements over it. The issue is expected to be one of the main topics of discussions to be held in Doha.

Another regional source said that Oman is not pushing forward with a classic tariff system, while the American side has expressed reservations about some elements of the proposal, which it intends to discuss with Omani mediators.

Meanwhile, White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly reiterated the US administration's position regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz.

"President Trump has been clear that Iran cannot cross the strait for a fee, which is an international waterway," Kelly told CNN.

Also in Doha are President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, as well as Jared Kushner, who held meetings with Qatar's Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani, and other regional mediators.

According to a White House official, US and Iranian delegations are expected to participate separately in Wednesday's technical talks, mediated by Qatar and Pakistan.

The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the most strategic points on the globe, as about a fifth of the world's supply of oil and liquefied natural gas passes through it.

The ceasefire agreement published earlier this month stipulates that Iran will use its "best efforts" to guarantee the safe passage of commercial ships through this waterway.

The document also envisages Iran and Oman cooperating to determine the future administration of the Strait of Hormuz, giving Tehran a formal role in managing one of the most important corridors for global energy trade.
