"The plow must go deeper", Ngjela: The fight against corruption must

Since the creation of the Special Prosecution Office against Corruption and Organized Crime in 2016, this structure has targeted senior anti-corruption officials, including former Prime Minister Sali Berisha, whose file recently went to trial, former President Ilir Meta, former Deputy Prime Minister Arben Ahmetaj, etc.

As SPAK is approaching the end of its 9-year mandate, lawyer Spartak Ngjela, in an interview with journalist Arbër Hitaj on the "Studio Live" show on Report TV, praised SPAK's work, but stressed that it needs to delve deeper into corruption issues.

" SPAK has been a new achievement in the history of Albanian justice. The main thing is that it has international assistance in a comprehensive sense, including professional assistance. So far, in my opinion, it has gone well. It could have gone a little faster, but due to the fact that there are foreign experts there, they do not let you run around without accurate evidence. The point is that the evidence we have so far or the facts of SPAK's activity are two Prime Ministers, two former Prime Ministers arrested, a President, several ministers, mayors. I think the anti-corruption issue is on a good path. It will continue to deepen, because corruption here has been very large and very serious, but let's see how SPAK will move forward ," he continued.

Meanwhile, when asked whether the mandate of SPAK should be extended, lawyer Ngjela says without hesitation that it should be.

" It is mandatory to extend it. It did a great job in Albania, but the issue still requires it. The plow will go deeper. Corruption has been gigantic, unimaginable for a European country. I don't know how it continues at these moments, but SPAK has created that tension of fear. It must continue, and deeper ," he said.
