"ECO ALB"/ The garbage that left its mark on the mayor's office;

Today's operation by the Prosecution, with simultaneous checks in 14 different locations, put hundreds of police forces and specialists in motion to investigate one of the biggest scandals of abuse of public funds and the environment in Albania, the "ECO ALB" affair, a scheme that has long been rumored as the symbol of "green" corruption.

The search resulted in the seizure of illegal items, documents, computers, and evidence that proves how contracts for waste collection and management have turned into a launderette of public funds.

Several people were immediately arrested. But who are they? Employees, drivers, mid-level officials, the usual ones who end up as cannon fodder to maintain the facade of justice.

Meanwhile, one of the most talked-about names in this affair, Lelj Kaja, is being sought. Not the kind of search that leaves you sleepless, but the typical Albanian one: a little search in the morning, maybe once a week, and then "forgotten" among the files.

But Kaja is only the tip of a pyramid that rests on a much more important name, Gledis Llatja, the mayor of Elbasan, the man who, according to unofficial but reliable information, is the brains and the main political and financial beneficiary of the ECO ALB scheme. In every document, contract or action, the shadow of his power appears.

But where is Gledis Llatja today? Is she in an office signing a new waste tender? Is she handing out certificates for "improving air quality" in the city?

Or maybe he's appearing on a TV show to talk about "the values of transparency and sustainable development"?

This is where the great irony begins. While citizens watch as employees who carried out orders are arrested, the mayor who signed, shared, supervised, and benefited continues calmly, smiling, and unaffected.

Albanian justice, unfortunately, continues to turn a blind eye to people with real power and open the doors of prison to the little ones.

In any normal country, a high-ranking official implicated in an affair of this magnitude would be under investigation, suspended, and faced justice. But in Albania, Llatja is still in power, with protocol, driver, bodyguard, and speeches about “sustainable development.”

The question that remains unanswered. Where is the investigation into Gladis Llatja? Is it in a drawer somewhere? Or maybe in a file waiting to become obsolete?

The "ECO ALB" affair is not just a story about garbage. It is a story where the garbage is not only in the trash cans, but also in the files that need to be investigated.

And as long as justice chooses to turn a deaf ear to big names, Albania will continue to wash its hands of garbage, but never be cleansed./ In-front.org
