At the "Campo de Futbol de Vallecas" stadium in Madrid, Rayo Vallecano secured a convincing 3-0 victory over AEK in the first quarterfinal match of the Conference League, taking an important step towards qualifying for the semifinals.
The home team started the match aggressively, taking the lead in the 3rd minute. After a quick counterattack, Ilias Akhomah finished with precision, surprising Albanian goalkeeper Thomas Strakosha.
At the end of the first half, Rajo Vajekano doubled the lead. Strakosha managed to stop Akhomah's first shot, but was unable to react to the second attempt by Unai Lopez, who, very close to the goal, sent the ball into the net.
In the 74th minute, the home team scored their third goal. Isi Palazon scored from the penalty spot, after a handball inside the area by a Greek team player.
Thomas Strakosha was a starter for AEK, while Albanian national team defender Ivan Balliu did not play, watching the entire match from the bench.
With this clean 3-0 victory, Rajo Vajekano is significantly closer to the semi-finals. The return match will take place in a week and is expected to finally decide the fate of this duel.
