Iran has informed the International Football Association Board (FIFA) that it may withdraw from the 2026 World Cup if its Group G matches against Belgium, Egypt and New Zealand are not moved from the United States to Mexico. The main reason for this request is related to public security concerns.
Iran's Sports Minister Ahmad Doniamali has said that the possibility of the Iranian national team playing in cities like Los Angeles and Seattle is "very low." He highlighted the lack of logistical guarantees and cited recent statements by US President Donald Trump as factors that, in his opinion, make the situation unacceptable.
Despite Tehran's demands and diplomatic pressure, FIFA has not yet given any indication of changing the location of the matches. In this situation, the final decision on Iran's participation remains in the hands of the Iranian authorities, who have requested "concrete guarantees" before taking a final stance.
According to FIFA regulations, in the event that Iran withdraws from the competition, its place will not go to Italy, but to the United Arab Emirates, in accordance with the organization's territorial criteria and current practices.
