Julia Emiri is the new leader of the National Council of the Democratic Party of Albania. After counting the votes, it turned out that Emiri has received the support of 207 members of the National Council, against 83 votes for candidate Silva Hasaj. The two names that competed for the head of the National Council were given by Sali Berisha, while it is not known whether they are his choices or not.

Hasa ran for MP in the Fier District, part of what was considered the open list, while Emiri is known for her engagement in protests called by the Democratic Party, mainly those organized in front of Tirana Municipality.

The DP National Council was led by Edi Paloka, who was elected to this position during the time the DP was led by Lulzim Basha, but also afterwards, when Sali Berisha took over. Paloka announced a few days ago that he would not run for this position.

At the beginning of the National Council meeting, Berisha announced that the leadership of the National Council would be in the hands of a woman.

"Now, in accordance with the relevant article of the statute, I will present before you the proposals, from which you will choose those who you consider most deserving. It was intended that the National Council would be headed by a woman and two candidacies have been proposed. Ms. Julia Emiri and Ms. Silva Hasaj," said Berisha.
