Iran came from behind twice to draw 2-2 with New Zealand in their opening Group G match at the World Cup. The match was fast-paced, with plenty of chances for both teams and was played in a tense atmosphere, amid anti-government protests by Iranian fans in Tehran.
New Zealand took the lead in the 7th minute. Elijah Just scored with a quick shot from inside the box after an assist from Chris Wood. Iran responded and equalized in the 32nd minute, when Ramin Rezaeian fired the ball into the net from close range, sparking the enthusiasm of most of the fans in the packed stadium in Los Angeles.
Just, the 26-year-old winger at Motherwell, restored New Zealand's lead in the 54th minute, slotting the ball past goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand, again after a crucial pass from Wood.
However, Iran found the answer once again. In the 64th minute, Mohammad Mohebi scored with a header near the far post, sealing the final score at 2-2.
