"La Roja" dominated for 90 minutes, but failed to break the resistance of 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, settling for a surprise 0-0 draw in Atlanta.
The World Cup has recorded its first big surprise. Spain, one of the contenders for the trophy, did not go further than a goalless draw against Cape Verde in the first match of Group H.
In the match held in Atlanta, “La Roja” controlled the game from start to finish and created several clear scoring chances, but faced an exceptional evening from goalkeeper Vozinha. The 40-year-old goalkeeper became the hero of the African team, neutralizing every attempt by the Spaniards.
The best chance of the first half came in the 39th minute, when Ferran Torres hit the crossbar after an assist from Cucurella. In the ensuing play, Oyarzabal tried to head the ball in, but Vozinha reacted fantastically to keep the goal intact.
The panorama did not change in the second half either. Fabian Ruiz, Llorente and Cucurella tried to find the advantage goal, while the talented Lamine Yamal was also activated on the field, but the Cape Verde defense and the heroic performance of the goalkeeper did not allow any mistakes.
On the other hand, Cape Verde's debutants defended with discipline and attempted to counterattack, managing to secure a historic point against one of the strongest national teams in the tournament.
After the final whistle, the 0-0 score was celebrated as a victory by the Africans, while for Spain this remains a false step at the start of the World Cup.
With this draw, Cape Verde writes one of the most beautiful pages in its football history, while Spain is forced to seek a reaction in the next matches to avoid complicating the path to the knockout stage.
