Three men in California have been convicted of 'insurance fraud' after staging fake attacks on luxury cars using a person dressed in a bear costume.
The scheme was uncovered after a viral video was submitted to insurance companies, which appeared to show a bear attacking a 2010 Rolls-Royce Ghost in the Lake Arrowhead area on January 28, 2024. Similar claims for damage to two other luxury Mercedes vehicles were also filed on the same date and location.
However, experts from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife analyzed the footage and concluded that the "bear" in the video was actually a masked person.
After that, the state Department of Insurance launched Operation “Bear Claw.” During the search of the suspects’ residences, authorities also found the suit used in the fraud. According to the investigation, the scheme involved $141,839 in insurance benefits.
Those involved, Alfiya Zuckerman (39 years old), Ruben Tamrazian (26 years old) and Vahe Muradkhanyan (32 years old), pleaded no contest to fraud charges and were each sentenced to 180 days in prison and two years of supervised release.
State Insurance Commissioner Ricardo Lara said: "What may have seemed unbelievable turned out to be exactly that, and now those responsible are being held accountable."
