Artemis II mission, footage released as Earth disappears behind the Moon

NASA's Artemis II mission marked another significant development in space exploration, accomplishing the longest human flight around the Moon and back, a feat not repeated since 1972. The journey lasted 10 days and included a several-hour phase near lunar orbit.

During the nearly 7 hours near the Moon, the crew reported rare observations, including a total solar eclipse and the phenomenon known as "Earthset," where the Earth gradually disappears behind the Moon's horizon, in an effect similar to sunset on Earth.

Mission commander Reid Wiseman released footage taken during this moment, showing the Earth's movement relative to the lunar surface. The recording was made with simple equipment made available to the astronauts to document the mission.

According to Wiseman, the footage is raw and provides a direct representation of what the crew observed during the flight. Also on board were astronauts Christina Koch, Victor Glover and Jeremy Hansen, who continuously documented developments during the mission.

Artemis II launched on April 1, 2026, and ended on April 10, concluding one of the most highly anticipated missions in recent years in NASA's space program.
