Scientists have identified a star with an extremely metal-poor chemical composition that could link it to the earliest generations of celestial bodies created after the birth of the Universe. The object, called SDSS J0715-7334, is located in the Milky Way and is considered very close to Earth in astronomical terms.

The data on this star have been published in the journal Nature Astronomy. Its discovery and observation were based on the Sloan Digital Sky Survey-V and the Magellan telescope in Chile.

According to the research team, the star may not have originally formed in our galaxy. The researchers estimate that it may have originated in the Large Magellanic Nebula and was then dragged towards the Milky Way during cosmic evolution.

Analysis of its composition clearly sets it apart from most known stars. SDSS J0715-7334 is almost entirely composed of hydrogen and helium, with a metal content of only 0.005 percent. This makes it a candidate for association with the most primitive stellar populations.

After the Big Bang, the Universe formed as a very hot mixture of energetic particles. Over time, the matter cooled and concentrated into clouds of neutral hydrogen gas. In areas of higher density, gravity caused the material to collapse and led to the creation of the first generation of stars, composed in primitive conditions mainly of hydrogen and helium.

These stars did not live long. Their extinction and explosions created the conditions for the formation of subsequent generations, which contained more heavy elements. It is precisely because of the extreme lack of these elements that the discovered star is now seen as a rare remnant of the earliest stages of the Universe.

The characteristics of SDSS J0715-7334 are giving astronomical research a new object to study the oldest periods of star formation.
