Ozzy Osbourne, icon of heavy metal music and legendary vocalist of the British band Black Sabbath, has passed away at the age of 76. Known as the “Prince of Darkness,” Osbourne passed away yesterday morning surrounded by his family, as announced in an official statement:
“It is with more sadness than words can express that we announce that our beloved Ozzy has passed away. He was with his family and surrounded by love. We ask that everyone respect our privacy at this time.”
The singer had long suffered from health problems and only a few weeks ago returned to the stage for a farewell concert with Black Sabbath in Birmingham, his hometown and that of the legendary band. The concert, the last of his career, raised over 140 million pounds for charity and was watched by thousands in person and millions more online.
Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948 in Aston, Birmingham, he left school at 15 and worked in various jobs until he formed his own band with friend Geezer Butler.
Black Sabbath, formed in 1968, revolutionized the music scene with songs such as "Paranoid", "War Pigs" and "Iron Man", becoming a forerunner of heavy metal music.
After leaving the band in 1979 due to disagreements with his fellow members, Osbourne embarked on a remarkable solo career. The song "Crazy Train" became one of his biggest hits, while his solo albums put him at the top of the world charts.
His stage appearances were often accompanied by sensational moments, including the infamous episode in 1982 when he mistakenly bit off the head of a bat, thinking it was a toy.
In the early 2000s, Ozzy and his family also gained fame on television with the reality show "The Osbournes", where the audience followed their life in Los Angeles, amidst humor and chaos.
Ozzy Osbourne's legacy remains indelible in the music world. He leaves behind his wife Sharon, children and millions of fans around the world. A concert film commemorating his life and career is expected to be released in 2026.
An era ends with the passing of a legend who gave voice to darkness and soul to rock.
