Election of the new President, Kurti takes steps back; LVV withdraws from the
Prime Minister of Kosovo, Albin Kurti

LVV announced that it is ready to withdraw its current candidates for this post, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca, as well as MP Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku, if PDK and LDK present the three requested names.

The Vetevendosje Movement (LVV), the ruling party of Prime Minister Albin Kurti, announced today that it has called on the two largest opposition parties, the Democratic Party of Kosovo (PDK) and the Democratic League of Kosovo (LDK), to jointly propose three candidates for the position of the next president of Kosovo, with the aim of avoiding early elections.

This call, which according to the LVV is valid until Sunday evening, comes at a time when the constitutional deadline for electing the president ends on Tuesday.

In a statement posted on Facebook, LVV announced that it is ready to withdraw its current candidates for the post, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Glauk Konjufca, and MP Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku, if PDK and LDK present the three requested names. According to the party, this decision was made during a meeting of the Presidency held on Friday evening.

"We invite PDK and LDK to jointly propose three names from which the new President of the 10th legislature could be elected," LVV wrote.

The ruling party emphasized that candidates must be "unifying figures, with high civic and national integrity, with proven contribution to professional and social life, and outside the current political scene."

"A solution must be found, because it is possible. We must try and engage together, because it is our duty that stems from the responsibility that the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo have entrusted to us," wrote the LVV.

The VETËVENDOSJE! Movement held a meeting of its Presidency last night, in which political developments were discussed as well as the necessary actions and positions in service of the public and state interest and the general and common good.

In the situation created around the election of the President and the great damage that an unnecessary and repeated electoral process would cause to the country, the VETËVENDOSJE! Movement has already taken a series of concrete steps to find a solution.

Despite our numerous and generous proposals, the response we have received has only been rejection.

In these circumstances, to avoid another electoral process that resolves nothing, and to preserve institutional stability, the VETËVENDOSJE! Movement takes another step with a new, concrete and unifying proposal.

We invite PDK and LDK to jointly propose three names from which the new President of the 10th legislature could be elected.

These three candidates must be unifying figures, with high civic and national integrity, with proven contributions to professional and social life, and outside the current political scene.

For these three, at least 90 signatures of members of the Assembly of the Republic of Kosovo would be secured. In that case, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora Glauk Konjufca and MP Dr. Fatmire Mulhaxha-Kollçaku would first withdraw from the candidacy.

Time is limited. Due to constitutional deadlines, we expect a response from opposition entities by Sunday evening.

A solution must be found, because it is possible. We must try and engage together, because it is our duty that stems from the responsibility that the citizens of the Republic of Kosovo have entrusted to us.

Political crisis in Kosovo:

Since April 4, the Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, has assumed the position of acting president, after former President Vjosa Osmani's five-year mandate expired.

Kurti's LVV proposed two names for the position of president on March 5: Glauk Konjufca, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Diaspora, and MP Fatmire Mullhaxha-Kollçaku. Due to the lack of a quorum, the process has been blocked.

The next day, former President Vjosa Osmani presented a decree dissolving the Assembly and paving the way for new elections. Osmani herself was aiming for a second term, but did not secure the necessary support in this regard. The decree was sent to the Constitutional Court by the Government.

The court then issued a ruling stating that the former president's decree had no legal effect and set April 28 as the deadline for presidential elections, otherwise the country would go to elections that must be held within 45 days.

The Vetëvendosje Movement won 57 seats in the Assembly in the early elections of December 28, 2025, but they are not enough to elect the president. To finalize this process, at least 80 votes are needed, out of 120 seats in the Assembly of Kosovo.
