Foreigners coming to Albania as tourists have increased the demand for dairy products, but instead of local milk, we are giving them milk from Serbia, Italy, and Greece.
Data from INSTAT show that the total amount of milk collected last year increased to over 1 million tons, 60 thousand more than in 2024, but this was mainly due to the expansion of imports.
Pedagogue Ndoc Faslia told A2CNN: "There are two main reasons. First, the departure of residents from the village, secondly, the bankruptcy of several livestock complexes in Albania."
Domestically, from over 1 million tons in 2021, an amount of less than 876 tons of milk was collected. Almost 130 thousand tons less in the span of 5 years.
Donjaldo Hoxha, a sector expert, emphasizes: "This decline is alarming. The main causes are the lack of sustainable subsidies, low milk prices on the market and the migration of young people from the countryside. Without immediate measures, Albanian livestock will continue to weaken."
From over 337 thousand in 2021, there were less than 275 thousand cattle in the country last year. Over 62 thousand fewer cattle in the span of 5 years.
" This crisis is not only affecting the economy, the agricultural frontier of families is being destroyed. A large number of rural families that depend directly on livestock and milk for survival are today facing poverty and economic insecurity ," Faslia declares.
In this silence of the fields, where villages are searching for the light of true rebirth, which transcends words and promises, the need arises for a resurrection to restore vitality to the land and the people who have given it life for centuries.
Donjaldo Hoxha states: “ In essence, livestock and dairy production are today a reflection of the broader social and economic challenges facing Albanian villages, a call for a true renaissance, to restore the “morning light” and vitality to the fields of Albania, as in Naimi’s poetry .”
