Progress Rama against Kurti: Kosovo does not belong to a leader, but to the
Kurti-Rama

The Mayor of Pristina, Përparim Rama, has been involved in the debate over the election of the president of Kosovo, articulating criticism of the Vetëvendosje Movement for its management of the political situation.

He stressed that recent developments in the Assembly are worrying and reflect, according to him, a concentration of power that undermines the democratic functioning of the state. " Kosovo does not belong to a single movement, leader or narrative. It belongs to its citizens ," Rama said.

According to him, the current situation does not represent healthy governance, but a model that, as he said, carries risks of institutional control and exclusion. “ What we are seeing is not healthy governance, but an alarming model of control, exclusion and capture of institutions ,” declared the mayor of the capital.

Rama underlined that the state of Kosovo is built on principles such as pluralism, transparency and accountability, adding that no political force should exceed these standards. “ No single party, regardless of the strength of its mandate, has the right to treat state institutions as an extension of its political machinery ,” he said.

He raised concerns that, according to him, the boundary between party and state is increasingly blurring. “ Decisions are being centralized, dissenting voices are being ignored and democratic processes are being weakened ,” Rama said, adding that the Assembly risks losing its role as a forum for debate and accountability.

The Mayor of Pristina also focused on the impact this situation has on citizens, emphasizing the need for a governance that empowers local government and encourages cooperation. He called for resistance to any tendency towards political monopolization and for more dialogue.

" Democracy is not just a matter of winning elections, it is the way power is exercised afterwards ," declared Rama, adding that Kosovo needs "balance, dialogue and leadership that unites, not divides."

Kosovo does not belong to one movement, one leader, or one narrative. It belongs to its citizens.

The situation unfolding in the Kosovo Assembly is deeply disturbing and reflects a dangerous concentration of power that undermines the very foundations of our democratic republic. What we are seeing is not healthy governance, but an alarming pattern of control, exclusion, and institutional capture.

Kosovo is built on the principles of pluralism, transparency and accountability. No single party, regardless of the strength of its mandate, has the right to override these principles or treat state institutions as extensions of its political machinery. However, this is precisely the path we are heading towards.

Vetëvendosje has increasingly blurred the line between party and state. Decisions are being centralized, dissenting voices are being sidelined, and democratic processes are being weakened. The Assembly, which should be the heart of open debate and representation, risks becoming a formal stamp, rather than a genuine forum for accountability.

As Mayor of Pristina, I see firsthand how this approach impacts citizens. Governance should empower municipalities, foster cooperation, and serve the real needs of the people, not tighten political control from the center.

We must resist any tendency towards political monopolization. Democracy is not just about winning elections, it is about how power is exercised afterwards. It requires restraint, inclusion and respect for institutions.

Today, more than ever, Kosovo needs balance, dialogue, and leadership that unites, not divides. Our future depends on protecting democratic norms, not on their erosion.
