Kosovo will go to the polls on June 7. Acting President Albulena Haxhiu decreed June 7 as the date for holding new parliamentary elections after consultations she had with political parties.
In a statement to the media, Haxhiu said that this date was set after assessing the constitutional deadlines, the organizational needs of the CEC, and the importance of the widest possible participation of citizens,
"After assessing the constitutional deadlines, the organizational needs of the CEC, and the importance of the widest possible participation of citizens in this process, I have decided that the early elections for the Assembly of the Republic will be held on June 7 ," she said at the press conference.
These will be the third parliamentary elections in just over a year, reflecting the deep political crisis and polarization between the ruling and opposition parties in Kosovo. Meanwhile, the Central Election Commission is expected to immediately begin preparations for organizing the electoral process on June 7, 2026. For the organization of these elections, the CEC has requested an amount of 8 million euros.
It is worth noting that within just 16 months, the parliamentary elections have cost Kosovo 31.3 million euros. Those of February 9, 2025 cost about 7.1 million euros, while those of December 28 cost about 7.4 million euros. To this amount is added 8.8 million euros for the two rounds of local elections held in October last year. To these figures is added the expected cost of about 8 million euros for the new elections.
We recall that the decision for extraordinary elections came automatically after the failure of the Kosovo Assembly to elect the country's new president within the constitutional deadline.
The opposition (PDK, LDK and AAK) boycotted the last session, preventing the necessary quorum from being reached. As a result, the Assembly was automatically dissolved according to the Constitution.
