The European Union has expressed regret over the lack of an agreement among political parties in Kosovo on the election of the president, leading the country towards new elections for the third time in less than a year and a half.

In a statement to Radio Free Europe, an EU spokesperson stressed the need for institutional stability and political dialogue.

"It is urgent for Kosovo to strengthen inter-party dialogue to ensure the efficient functioning of institutions and not to miss opportunities that bring benefits to citizens, including those from the Growth Plan ," he said.

The spokesperson added that the EU has repeatedly called for political responsibility and cooperation among key actors.

The political crisis deepened after the Kosovo Assembly failed to elect a president within the constitutional deadline, leading to its dissolution on April 28, according to a ruling by the Constitutional Court. As a result, the acting president, Albulena Haxhiu, is expected to announce the date of new elections, which must be held within 45 days.

Efforts to reach a political agreement have failed. Prime Minister Albin Kurti stated that he has tried to find a compromise with the opposition, but without result. On the other hand, opposition parties have opposed the majority's proposals, deepening the institutional deadlock.

According to the Constitution, the election of the president requires a qualified majority and the participation of at least 80 deputies in the chamber, a condition that was not met in the last session.

Yesterday, the head of the CEC, Kreshnik Radoniqi, said that organizing the elections requires considerable time and preparation, describing the process as not easy.

After a meeting with the Speaker of the Parliament, Albulena Haxhiu, Radoniqi stated that the most likely date for holding the elections is June 7, although other alternatives remain under consideration.

"As soon as possible. The budget issue has not yet been discussed in the CEC, but I believe it will be approximately like in the past elections. We need preparation, it is not an easy process... Two dates have been mentioned, May 31 or June 7. In our opinion, it is June 7, but the decision belongs to the president,"  he said.
