Starting with a lot of "show", it seems that the closing of the Diaspora Summit is following the same rhythm. The focus this time is not on concrete policies or results, but on a symbolic gesture by Prime Minister Edi Rama: the handing over of the Albanian passport to the former mayor of New York, Erik Adams.
The ceremony, held within the framework of the IV Diaspora Summit, was accompanied by humorous tones from the Prime Minister, who declared that Adams will soon learn the Albanian language.
" We are the only ones who can say: I had this job! Now it has been handed over, who has the courage to take this opportunity. I know you are familiar with this, but what happens here is different: here everything opens up and grows. This is your ID, this is your Albanian passport. Soon we will also learn Albanian. Dear Erik, welcome to Albania ," said Rama.
However, beyond the festive atmosphere, several fundamental questions still remain unanswered: on what legal basis was Erik Adams granted an Albanian passport and were the relevant procedures respected? So far, there has been no official clarification on this issue.
The summit took place in a scenography curated down to the last detail. The steps of the Palace of Congresses were covered with a red carpet, while national symbols and the participation of dozens of Albanians from the diaspora created a ceremonial atmosphere.
This is the fourth summit organized by the government in the space of a decade, but without a clear public balance sheet on the concrete impact that these meetings have had on the real inclusion of the diaspora in the economic and social development of the country.
