Prime Minister Edi Rama has once again accused foreign actors and disinformation networks of manipulating the narrative around the mass protests taking place in Tirana, claiming that artificial intelligence, fabricated materials, and false information are being used to distort reality.
During a conversation with journalists from European Union countries, Rama said that Albanian institutions are collecting evidence and documentation for what he described as an organized disinformation campaign.
"We are talking about things that do not exist, that are false. We are working and will come up with things, we will wait for a calmer moment. We are working on the files or files of the flamingos and we will show you how much deepfake, how much disinformation and how much fabrication or engineering is being done to the information from the sources that are using and multiplying it," Rama declared.
According to him, the authorities have concrete data that shows attempts to create a virtual reality, which does not match the situation on the ground.
"We know for a fact that there are actors who are trying to exploit it by using penetration and others for their agenda, which has nothing to do with Albania as a target, but as an interesting place to give energy to their policymaking," the prime minister said.
Speaking about the sources of these interventions, Rama mentioned Iran as the only state actor that, according to him, has been involved in exploiting the situation.
"I'm not talking about malicious actors. There is only one such actor, which is Iran. We know it with facts. I have never said and I am not saying that Iran invented it, but I am saying that Iran immediately jumped into this story," he said.
The head of government also recalled the cyberattacks that Albania has suffered in the past and for which Albanian authorities have blamed Iran, arguing that there is an interest in linking the situation in Albania to Middle Eastern narratives.
"Who has an interest in creating and fueling the anti-Israel, anti-Jewish and anti-Semitic narrative? What does Gaza have to do with this development or the Israeli flag? It has encountered dispersion, there has been interest," Rama declared.
In addition to foreign interference, the prime minister said that regional competition in the tourism sector has also contributed to the spread of fake news that, according to him, aims to damage Albania's image.
"The other part is competitors. We have had a lot of false information, both from competition and tourism. It would not be wrong to say that even among you there are people who have reposted or seen reposts from journalists who have reposted hundreds of thousands of protesters. It's the world we live in. It's crazy, but that's how it is," he told EU journalists.
Rama insisted that the government has evidence and not just perceptions about what he considers a coordinated campaign of manipulation, while warning that data and documents that, according to him, support these claims will be made public in the future.
