The Prime Minister used the conference with international media correspondents to present Albania as a country where protest is free, while denying the existence of a project in Zvërnec.
As protests against him have crossed Albania's borders and been widely covered by prestigious international media outlets such as Reuters, CNN and The Guardian, Prime Minister Edi Rama appeared before foreign journalists this Tuesday in an attempt to control the narrative being built abroad about recent political developments.
Asked about the protest that began in Zvërnec and that has now turned into a broader movement against his government, Rama tried to present the situation as evidence of the functioning of democracy in Albania, also bringing to attention the events of January 21.
" First of all, this is a free country. I have only been a participant in protests and I know the taste of the moment when it is difficult to protest, I also know the taste of blood when the protest takes place in an unfree environment. On this boulevard, not a century ago, but only less than 20 years ago, or more precisely, in 2011, four protesters were killed with assault weapons that were aimed at them from this very building. For me, it is a different era, a different moment in history. It is really something very good that people can protest without any problem ," said Rama.
The Prime Minister argued that the protest took on greater proportions after the incident with the security guard against a citizen in the Zvërnec area, emphasizing that the authorities reacted immediately.
“ This protest was provoked by an ugly act of violence by a security guard against a protester at the land border, the place we have been talking about for a week or so now, for which we took the harshest and fastest measures. The guard has been arrested, the director of the Vlora Police has been dismissed and the police unit that was on the ground and did not immediately intervene to stop the guard has been put under investigation. The security company has had its license revoked. The act of violence ignited feelings, went viral and paved the way for questions to be raised about the development, the property and the project ,” he stated.
Rama also addressed the claims about the existence of a project in Zvërnec, insisting that there is no concrete project to be canceled.
" Then, suddenly the issue became broader and now it mentions everything that is okay, but we are no longer in the dynamics of a few or many people. Everything changed because suddenly there is no project. The protest turned into a massive protest with the refrain 'cancel the project'. I said yes, we cancel it at this moment, but show me the project. There is no project. It is not about me or Albania, but about democratic society to reflect on how half-truths can ignite the environment ", said the prime minister.
Further, the head of government said that the public debate has strayed from the essence of the issue, linking the situation to the influence of information on social networks and online platforms.
" We are no longer staying on the point, but somewhere else. I have seen reports of hundreds of thousands of people that are ridiculous, but I don't want to talk about the numbers, I want to talk about the point. This has nothing to do with me or us. It has to do with how half-truths and information circulating across platforms can completely change the nature of a public debate ," Rama told foreign journalists.
The prime minister's statements come a day after the protests against him received widespread coverage in international media, with Reuters broadcasting the developments live from Tirana, while several foreign media outlets also reported on the protesters' demands for Rama's removal from power.
