The US senator said that over 100,000 Albanians are protesting against Jared Kushner's project, while the prime minister responded by accusing him of relying on "headlines and half-truths."
A reaction by US Senator Bernie Sanders to the protests in Albania has also brought a response from Prime Minister Edi Rama, who has dedicated a long message to the social network "X", opposing the American Democrat's claims about Jared Kushner's project on the Albanian coast.
Sanders wrote that over 100,000 Albanians have taken to the streets against a luxury resort that he says is being planned by Donald Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and his Qatari partners.
" In tiny Albania, over a hundred thousand people have taken to the streets against an environmentally destructive luxury resort planned by Jared Kushner and his billionaire Qatari partners. This is what global oligarchy looks like, and the people are saying NO ," Sanders wrote.
The American senator's reaction immediately received a response from Prime Minister Rama, who accused him of judging based on media headlines and not facts.
“ With all due respect, Senator, Albania is a country, not a line in an American political argument. I sincerely appreciate your interest, but the facts on the ground are quite different from the headlines. And when the headlines become a source of understanding, half-truths tend to grow into bigger and bigger lies every day, amplified by the very platforms whose distorting power you have spent so much time raising public awareness about. The fact that less than 10,000 protesters somehow become 100,000 in your post is perhaps the least harmful amplification of anger among many others ,” Rama wrote.
The Prime Minister insisted that there is no approved project yet and that the debate is taking place on something that, according to him, has not been finalized.
“ There is still no approved project, no building permit and no final design. What exists today is a planning process involving some of the world’s leading architects, landscape designers, environmental experts and social impact consultants, working on a vision for high-end sustainable tourism with measurable environmental benefits, more green space, more trees and stronger biodiversity outcomes. Disagreement is legitimate. Environmental scrutiny is welcome. This is how democracies should work ,” he continued.
Rama further said that decisions on the development of the Albanian coast will be made by Albanian institutions and not by political debates abroad.
" What is built on the coast of Albania will be decided by our vision, our laws, our institutions and will be debated by our people. But it will never be held hostage to the fear of big dreams, big thinking and big investment. Our challenge is not to choose between nature and development, but to prove that nature can regenerate and development can be reinvented by building with nature and not against it, for the good of both people and the environment ," declared the Prime Minister.
At the end of his reaction, Rama accused the American senator of importing ideological debates into Albania and invited him to visit the country.
" What we don't need is imported anger, ideological reflexes or the transformation of Albania into a prop in someone else's political theater. Facts first. Always. Because Albania is not a backdrop for foreign political battles. It is a small, but proud and free country that makes its own choices and determines its own future. And having said all this, I hope you will remember Albania even after the headlines have passed. Even better, I hope you will come and see our beautiful country for yourself ," Rama concluded.
