Roman Abramovich-Ken Bates

English football has lost one of its most iconic figures. Ken Bates, the former owner of Chelsea and Leeds United, has died at the age of 94.

Bates' name became known in 1982, when he bought Chelsea for just 1 pound, at a time when the London club was in a difficult financial situation and playing in the second tier of English football.

During his two decades at the helm, Bates played a significant role in stabilising and transforming Chelsea. He invested in getting the club back on track, creating the foundations on which a new era of success would later be built.

In 2003, after 21 years at the helm, Bates sold Chelsea for around £140m to Roman Abramovich. The sale marked the start of a golden era for the Londoners, with the Russian billionaire subsequently transforming the club into one of the greatest powers in European football.

Although his years at Chelsea were often marred by controversy, Ken Bates remains a significant figure in the club's history. He will always be remembered as the man who bought Chelsea for one pound and laid the foundations of a transformation that changed the fortunes of the London club forever.
