Ilir Alimehmeti speaks about the election defeat and the failure to enter

With the disappointing result of the Democratic Party, which secured only 13 mandates in the Tirana district, the well-known doctor Ilir Alimehmeti, who ran on the open list, lost the chance to become part of the new Parliament.

Alimehmeti was in a strong "battle" within the category with Jorida Tabaku for the Democrats' only preferential mandate, a race that was ultimately won by the current DP MP.

Asked on "Off the Record", on A2 CNN, what went wrong for the DP in the May 11 elections, Alimehmeti focused on the preliminary OSCE/ODIHR report, highlighting violations such as pressure from SP activists on the administration and vote buying.

" I think you all have a clear idea and have observed how the elections in Albania have been faced and how they are, in the concept of whether they are free and fair. I am a very institutional person and I speak with what we officially have in hand. Which means that we have a preliminary report from the OSCE/OIHR that says very clearly that the candidates have not been equal among themselves, we are talking about candidates between the opposition and the establishment. Where it is very clearly mentioned how the administration, the state, has been used again. If we accept that we expect the elections to be free and fair, we have the wrong system. Let's say directly that we are in a dictatorship and close this conversation. If we claim to be in a democracy, in 2025 I will find the same report as always with the same problems, but with a very clear sentence. This time they do not say they were reported to us but they say they were proven. There is a very big difference in level. Which means that either they have evidence and facts on what they say about how the elections were not free and fair, or they have witnessed and this happened before our own eyes. We will follow it, it is a preliminary report. The process is not over yet. We have seen very well that miracles have happened to us. I was seeing that more envelopes from the Diaspora were counted than were declared. So, system errors that have incorrectly counted envelopes, which means I have 10 envelopes in total and I counted 11. Yes, this is ridiculous. The fact is that year after year, election after election, we are losing voter turnout and this is because you are losing faith that these elections can ever be elections ," said Alimehmeti.

Faced with the fact that the Socialist Party maintained its number of votes, around 700,000 in 2021 and even added about 100,000 more, together with the Diaspora, Alimehmeti said that the same thing happened under the communist regime.

" Yes, yes, even during the 50 years of dictatorship, 99.9% of voters were there. But it does not mean that they were free and fair elections. If we cannot guarantee a standard of elections in Albania, it means that we cannot give hope for creating a state in this Albania and automatically people will leave. This is the reason why the youth is leaving and the country is being devastated. This truth hurts here. But to this day, even the government has not guaranteed free elections and the international community has turned a blind eye to this element. If you hurt someone, then who will you hurt? " declared Alimehmeti.
