The leader of the Democratic Party, Sali Berisha, has come out in support of the investment project in Zvërnec, describing it as the most serious foreign investment that has arrived in Albania in the last 13 years.
During his speech in Parliament, Berisha harshly criticized the government and the Socialist Party, accusing them of creating obstacles for foreign investors and contributing to their departure from the country.
"The DP supports foreign investments. You are driving away the only foreign investor left in Albania. The investment in Zvërnec is the most serious that has come in these 13 years," Berisha declared.
The opposition leader said that Albania is facing a lack of foreign investment, claiming that for years important international companies have given up on projects in the country.
Commenting on the debates over ownership in the Zvërnec area, Berisha stressed that the Democratic Party supports full respect for property rights, but argued that responsibility for any irregularities falls on state institutions and not on the investor who has received legal approvals.
He also commented on the events that took place during the protest against the project in Zvërnec, condemning the police escorting of a protester. According to Berisha, the way in which the citizen was intervened was unacceptable and "barbaric."
"You saw and heard it yourself. That he would go to the village? Not to the village, but to the cell. That you who voted for him are now leaving for sins; an endless chain of hypocrisy, like a thief caught in the county, in the treasury. Where is he today? Where do you have him?
But in this whole story that you see, the only investor in 13 years is a foreigner. How can we remove and expel him from Albania? I'm telling you: for 3 years there has been no foreign investor on Albanian soil. Thirteen years Europe says: no European companies have entered any tender in Albania. One of the most powerful companies, which was going to build a tourist resort in Lalez, left.
No foreign investors. What is happening? What is the DP's position? We believe that foreign investments are of vital importance for the development of Albania, as during the period we governed, Albania was guaranteed the largest investments in the history of this country. In the energy sector alone, 2 billion euros.
What happens now? Now I'm telling you again: the DP supports foreign investment and you are driving away the only foreign investor left in Albania. You are driving him away. He himself told me: "You voted for me." He took off his mask.
"The outcry about property issues? The DP stands for the full and absolute respect of property rights. What was the solution at a time when billions were invested here? If you have a project approved by the government, with documents signed by official institutions, cadastre and other agencies, and the state approved the project, no one else had anything to do with the investor," Berisha said, among other things, in the Assembly.
