The infamous Spaç camp, a symbol of the pain and suffering of the politically persecuted, has returned to the center of public debate. This Saturday, dozens of activists and former political prisoners gathered at the site to protest against the works being carried out in the name of a “conservation project.”

“We are here today because we are deeply concerned about the way this prison and this camp are being treated,” said activist Vison Doshmi. “This is a place where thousands of people have suffered a terrible and unimaginable imprisonment.”

The interventions that have been carried out in the premises where visitors were once checked or in the camp officers' buildings have been described by protesters as a serious act of distortion of history. "To alienate the origin of this place is an ugly crime, to deprive people of the right to look back," declared Gjergj Lekaj. Nuri Stefaj, another former prisoner, stated that "we have no objection to making films, documentaries, whatever they want, but the environment should remain as it is."

Fatos Lubonja, one of the strongest critical voices of the project, said that what is happening is “the destruction of memory and a falsification of what they want to do.” While Demir Pojani emphasized that “the suffering of the prisoners here is still heard – in these whispers, there should be no sarcasm.”

After strong reactions, the Ministry of Economy, Culture and Innovation (MEKI) reacted by clarifying that some of the interventions, including the reconstruction of the bathrooms and the terrace above them, have not been approved by the Institute of Cultural Heritage and are not included in the official project. As for other elements such as a metal tower, a piece of fencing, a gate and railings – MEKI promises that they will be realized only if they match historical evidence and photos and that they will be demountable.

But the activists are not calm. They warn that they will continue their resistance and public opposition, staunchly defending every stone and trace of Spaç – not for nostalgia, but for the dignity of national memory.
