Switzerland holds referendum on population limit to 10 million
Switzerland

The Swiss will vote on Sunday on a proposal that aims to set a maximum limit of 10 million inhabitants for the country's population by 2050.

The initiative, backed by the Swiss People's Party (SVP), is presented as a measure to reduce pressure on housing, public services and the environment. Opponents, including the government, businesses and unions, warn that it could cause labor shortages and damage relations with the European Union.

Switzerland's population has grown from 7.3 million in 2002 to 9.1 million today, while 27% of permanent residents were born abroad.

Under the proposal, the government would have to take measures once the population reaches 9.5 million, including restrictions on immigration and asylum. If the 10 million threshold is reached, Switzerland could be forced to review international agreements, including free movement with the EU.

Recent polls show a close race, with 52% against the initiative and 45% in favor, while a portion of voters remain undecided.

Supporters argue that the referendum aims to protect the quality of life in Switzerland, while opponents warn that the country needs immigrants to support the economy, healthcare and pension systems.
