The 2026 World Cup has been mired in controversy since the early stages of its organization. The most recent dispute erupted between FIFA and the Egyptian national team, after the world football governing body demanded changes to the official uniforms of the "Pharaohs".
According to FIFA's requirements, Egypt must make two major modifications to the national team's jerseys. The first involves removing the seven stars on the Federation's crest, while the second involves changing the color of the players' numbers.
The seven stars on Egypt's logo represent the seven titles won at the Africa Cup of Nations, the continent's most prestigious competition. The Egyptian national team is the tournament's record holder, having triumphed in the 1957, 1959, 1986, 1998, 2006, 2008 and 2010 editions.
However, FIFA has announced that only the stars of the World Cup-winning teams can be worn on the crest during the World Cup. For this reason, Egypt has been asked to remove them from the uniforms that will be used at the tournament.
Another point of contention is the color of the numbers on the jerseys. For years, Egypt has used gold numbers, a characteristic element of the uniform design. But FIFA considers it necessary for the numbers to be as visible as possible to referees, spectators and television broadcasts.
For this reason, the organization has requested that the numbers be replaced with white, ensuring greater contrast and easier identification of players during the 2026 World Cup matches.
The decision has sparked reactions in the sports community, as the stars on the emblem are considered an important part of the Egyptian national team's identity and a symbol of its success in African football.
