Mohamed Salah's class and quality, along with the persistence of the Egyptian players, gave the "Pharaohs" an impressive upset and a 3-1 victory over New Zealand, in the second week of the 2026 World Cup, leading Hossam Hassan's team to the top of Group G with 4 points.
In the first 20 minutes, New Zealand dominated at Vancouver's BC Place Stadium, creating two good scoring chances. In the 7th minute, Singh missed the target, while in the 14th, Just was stopped by goalkeeper Sobheir. A minute later, Finn Surman scored with a powerful header to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Egypt levelled the score after the 30th minute and increased the pressure through efforts from Salah (35', 46') and Ashour (45+1'). Finally, in the 58th minute, Zico equalised with a header from Hany's cross.
The Egyptian team took off and in the 67th minute completed the upset with a brilliant goal from its leader, Mohamed Salah.
The "icing on the cake" came in the 82nd minute, when Trezeguet, just six minutes after coming on as a substitute, headed home a Salah assist, sealing the final score 3-1 in Egypt's favor.
