The General Director of the State Police, Skënder Hita, has arrived at the Korça Local Police Directorate to closely follow the investigations and verifications that are taking place after the bloody operation in Lozhan i Maliqi.
His visit comes after the serious incident that occurred on Wednesday morning, where Special Force "Eagle" officer Enea Mekolli lost his life during an operation to arrest the much-wanted Violand Braçellari. Officer Edison Adri was also injured in the exchange of fire.
Earlier in the day, Hita visited the injured officer at the Trauma Hospital in Tirana, while warning that the incident would be subject to a detailed analysis. For this reason, a group from the Directorate of Professional Standards has also been sent to Korça, which will verify the procedures followed during the operation.
The focus of the verifications will be the organization of the action and the implementation of the operational plan, including the assessment of whether the forces deployed were sufficient to neutralize a person who was considered to be highly dangerous.
According to preliminary information, Braçellari resisted arrest and opened fire with an automatic weapon at police officers. He was injured during the police response and was transported to Tirana for medical treatment.
In parallel with the State Police verifications, the Korça Prosecutor's Office is also conducting investigations into the circumstances of the incident.
