Greek police have cracked down on a criminal network that was trafficking ammunition from Albania to the island of Crete. Four people were arrested, including a 65-year-old man suspected of being the ringleader of the gang, who had been convicted years earlier for the same crime.
According to investigations, the gang purchased thousands of cartridges of various calibers in Albania and transported them in modified trucks, where the ammunition was kept in secret locations to avoid police checks.
They would cross the goods at the Greek-Albanian border, then send them by ferry from the port of Piraeus to Crete, where they would sell them to interested parties for high fees.

At the time of their arrest at the Greek-Albanian border, police seized 24,000 rounds of ammunition, while further searches of their homes and vehicles found another 126 rounds of ammunition, a military weapon, 900 euros, and three vehicles.
It is learned that a 41-year-old man of Albanian origin, a member of the gang, was the person who maintained contacts with the traders and organized the shipments, while a 30-year-old man was arrested in Crete after illegally ordering ammunition from the criminal group.
The members of the criminal organization had defined roles. A 65-year-old man was at the head of the organization. He collected orders for ammunition, traveled to the border where he supervised the receipt of ammunition and payment of money, while he himself took care of their sale in Crete, traveling by motorbike.
A 72-year-old had created a special place inside the truck to hide the ammunition, a 73-year-old had taken on the duties of the truck driver, with whom he traveled to the border and then returned to Crete, and the 41-year-old Albanian took care of securing the ammunition from a fellow countryman, according to Prothotema.
The arrested are facing charges of violating the weapons law and other criminal offenses, while the case has been submitted to the competent prosecutor of Chania.
