48-year-old Albanian Ylli Didani, originally from the village of Janjar in Konispol Municipality, the head of an international drug trafficking network, is suspected of having purchased a seaside plot of land in the Dominican Republic worth three million dollars, using funds from drug trafficking.
According to evidence presented by the prosecution, Didani transferred more than $200,000 to the United States through an illegal system known as the "symbolic method" to finalize the purchase of land in the Dominican Republic.
The payment was facilitated by money laundering networks linked to Chinese organized crime, known as "los Chinos", who managed the movement of drug trafficking proceeds globally.
The case culminated in a guilty verdict against Didani, 43, charged with distribution of cocaine, distribution of drugs on ships subject to US jurisdiction, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
US authorities identified him as the leader of an organization with operations in the United States, South America and Europe, involved in transporting large-scale cocaine shipments.
Between 2019 and 2020, authorities seized more than 3,400 tons of cocaine transported on five different ships, with an estimated street value exceeding $100 million. In addition, the trial revealed that Didani and his associates designed an underwater drone to hide and transport drugs attached to the hulls of merchant ships heading to Europe.
Ylli Didani faces a maximum sentence of life in prison and remains in federal custody awaiting sentencing.
The investigation was conducted by agents from the DEA, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS-CI), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and local police departments in Michigan.
